Atletico started their 2016/2017 Midland League 1 campaign with a score draw at home to
Littleton. Sam Agar opened the scoring for Hinckley and the second was an own goal in
the second half.
The last club AFC played in the league were Littleton in April, winning that game comfortably,
and started this game in the same fashion. With Rico Taylor and Sean Williams causing
problems for the Ton boys on both wings, but Hinckley struggled to finish off the chances
created. Having spurned a couple good chances AFC eventually took the lead shortly before
half time when James Williams did well on the right, played in Lee Butler who ran past his
marker and crossed low to the back post for Sam Agar to run in on the back post and slot
into goal. Hinckley had the half time lead, but would feel they should have had more to show
for the half.
Lack of clinical finishing was punished in the first minute of the second half when a high
ball into the AFC area was punched away by Tom Cross, but landed at the feet of Dan Holloway
who calmly returned the ball back goalwards into the net to equalise. This gave Littleton
some belief and impetuous and they had a good 15 minute spell of pressure without creating
a clear cut goal chance. On the hour Atletico retook the lead thanks to a superb solo run from
Taylor on the left, dribbling past three Littleton challenges and finishing goal bound from
a tight angle, with Aaron Xavier helping the ball across the line whilst trying to clear. Then
followed a spell of end to end football as both teams played open style. With 15 minutes
remaining Littleton equalised again, Williams was caught in possession and Connor Perry-Holmes
ran at the defence finishing low into the corner when allowed the space to shoot. The final
minutes of the match were a stalemate as Littleton were happy for a point and Hinckley unable
to break the defence.
