  MATT GADSBY Defence
Born: Sutton Coldfield September 1979, Passed Away: September 2006
Appearances 7  Goals 1

Matt signed a 1 year contract for Hinckley United in June 2006, having transferred from Forest Green Rovers. The 6ft defender started his career at Walsall graduating through the youth team and even playing in the 2001 Division Two Play-off final when Walsall defeated Reading. He transferred to Mansfield in November 2002 before moving on to Kidderminster Harriers in May 2003. He played a season for the Harriers before transferring to Forest Green Rovers in June 2004, where he also was named Directors player of the year for 2004-2005 season.

Tragically Matthew, died on Saturday 9th September 2006 whilst he was playing for Hinckley United in an away match at Harrogate Town.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah, and young daughter.

Even though Matt was a Hinckley United player, many of the current Hinckley AFC supporters were present on that day, and Matt's passing had a profound effect which has continued through to AFC, as Matt's widow Sarah was presented with the 'number one' membership card upon the formation of the Community Club.

His memory should never be forgotten and so these pages remain as a record of our past. Below are the messages of support and condolence left by football fans from internet communities across the country. I will continue to add to these messages and leave this page here as a permanent reminder to us all.

The practical response in the days following Matt's death was overwhelming. Ordinary fans took it upon themselves voluntarily to organise bucket collections at games to donate to Matt's widow and daughter. There was a huge desire to help out and these collections were so many that the Football Club in tandem with the Gadsby family had to set up a Memorial Fund to cope with the donations. It wasn't long before organised events began to add to the Fund. No one person or organisation were pressurised to give anything, it was all down to generosity of the football community. At the time our Commercial Manager Dave Riche said: "The donations just keep flooding in we cannot thank the people out there enough. Everyone in the football community has come together for the fund and long may it continue." These events culminated in a Memorial Match at the Marston Stadium featuring a Legends XI and a Gadsby Select XI, featuring players from Matt's previous clubs.

On Sunday 15th July 2007 the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) charity held a fund raising walk along the banks of the River Thames. Hemel Hempstead based Hinckley United fan Mark Conner kindly offered to represent the club and fans by taking part in this walk.

Matthew is my brother. I cannot begin to describe what my family are going through but I wanted to write a message to say how deeply touched my family is having read all the messages on the Hinckley website. This is not official on behalf of my family but I wanted to thank everyone who has left a message. Fans, ex collegues and people who had never met Matt. We are deeply touched. It has been a great help to myself to read all the touching words people have written. Please continue to write these messages and say whatever you can about my brother, my pal.
Rachel

I've been reading all the messaages on here, reading the papers and seen the tv, yet it still does not seem real that I won't get to talk to my bro again. It's taken me a while to write something on here because there really are not enough words to explain how amazingly brilliant and talented Matthew was and still is. I can't thank everyone enough for their kind messages. I'm so proud of my brother for achieving all his biggest goals in life, and I hope I too can make him proud with mine. I'll love you forever pal, but I always told you that anyway. My love for always
middle sis Amy xxx

I am Matt's youngest sister, and I just want to say thank you all so much for all your messages! Matt loved it at Hinckley United and always will! He will be there still with all the lads playing and doing his headers. Love you so much Matthew I'm so proud of you!
Chipsticks PAL!!!
xxxxxxxxx Love you Love Emily xxxxxxxx(cheeky vimto) xxxxxxxxx

Cafu, We are all so proud of you. We are all stunned by this tragic loss and will find it hard to carry on. Only your daughter Milly, and Mia, Daniel and Aiden will get us through the coming weeks and fill a small part of the hole left in our lives by your sad loss. Perhaps God needed a center half up there. 'You'll never walk alone'
Mark Gillespie - Brother-in-Law xxx

I'm Lauren, I'm his cousin, he was a great person who always made people laugh I know he was loved by many people and it is really nice to see just how many people loved him just like his family did. Casey Stockton (his cousin) xxxxxx

The last time I saw you was at your mum's and I was trying to cut rach's hair, you were making me laugh by showing me a rude txt message I think it was about postman pat! I am so shocked that you have gone, ever since I have known you football was what you lived and breathed, I remember at school on non uniform days you wore your Liverpool football shirts. You are a lovely man with a fantastic personality who will be sadly missed. My love and thoughts are with Sarah your lovely wife, your beautiful daughter Millie, your mum and dad, Amy and Emily and my very good friend Rachel. Rest in peace and promise that you will never stop playing football.
Love Kellyxxxxxxxx

Matt, you will be dearly missed by your family and friends, I only really new you properly for the last twelve months and can say that you are one of life's truly nice guy's. Your dedication to football was amazing but more than that was your dedication to your family. God Bless Matt, sleep well. Until we all meet again
Chris Wakeman

I am finding it very hard to find the right words. I have only known you Matt a short period of time but what great times we have all had, the village do's and those long sunday afternoon's sitting in the pub's garden everyone laughing, joking with the kids all running around. You are a lovely lovely man and we will all miss you deeply, but never forget you. sleep well x
Vanda Wakeman

It was a pleasure to become friends with Matty he was the nicest guy you could ever wish to meet, he always had a smile on his face and would always make you laugh. We will really miss you Matty all I have left to say is " we love you mostest pal"
Sarah Clark

Words can’t express how sad we feel following the tragic loss of Matt. We have some great memories that have kept us smiling over the last few days. Our thoughts and hearts are with his family at this terrible time. Rest in peace Matt, we will remember you always.
Rachel and Simon, Matt’s friends

Our thoughts are with Jackie, Andy, Sarah, Rachel, Amy, Mark and family, words cant express the deep shock and sadness we feel, many, many happy fond memories we have. the loss will be felt. His smile was always a ray of sunshine! Sadly missed and forever in our hearts
Charlotte, Phil & Jemma - Matt's friends

I didn't know Matty that well, but on the occasions I had met him it was clear that he was a genuine and lovely person, he was fantastic with kids, and had a real talent as far as footie was concerned. I know the family, and how close they are, and knowing what they are all going through breaks my heart. I have been friends with Matty's sister Rachel for nearly 10 years now and have never known such a loving, caring family. I know that they will all help each other to deal with the tragic loss of such a wonderful person. It's hard to say just how shocked I am about Mattys death. I send all my love to Jackie, Andy, Rach, Amy, Emily, Sarah, Milly, Mark, Mia, Daniel and Aiden and all the other members of Matty's family. They do say "God takes the best there is", how true! God bless, sleep tight Matty.
Michelle Darlaston

I'm so shocked at the news of Matthews death, he was always so full of life. It's hard to imagine parties and get togethers without him, they will certainly never be the same. I grew up with Matt from the age of 14 being Rachel's (Matt's sister) best friend. I'll always remember us sitting up till god knows what time in the morning talking and laughing, mostly at Matt. He was an incredible man who will be very sadly missed. My thoughts are with all his family. At least we've have Milly, our little piece of Matthew. Love you pal x x
Julie

My Wife and I were very shocked to hear the news about Matt. I had the honour of being chosen by Matt and Sarah to photograph there wedding, I have to say they were one of the nicest couples we have ever met, always smiling. They even invited us both to the wedding and it was such a pleasure to be there. Even though Matt only touched our lives briefly he made a big impact on us both. Our thoughts go out to Sarah, Milly and the rest of Matts family. God bless you Matt, Rest in peace.
Love jim, Kim and family

Our hearts are with you, family and friends. You were always a ray of sunshine. May your light shine on!
Nick and Jo Tunnicliffe and family

I knew Matt for a good 5 or so years, from around the time he was at Walsall. He was a good friend of my ex, and we had many a good night having a laugh and a few drinks. Although I hadn't spoken to him for a while I still thought of him now and again. So shocked to hear the news. Sincere condolences to Jackie, Andy and family, and also to Matt's wife and baby, who I never had the opportunity to meet. God only takes the best. Rest in peace Matt, and just one word mate: "MANIC!" x.
Leanne

Matthew was a true gent and a lovable charactor. We were priveliged at our salon to have known him even though it was only to cut his hair. Our thoughts are with his family and they are in our prayers. He always had a smile on his face and that is how he should be rememberd. All our love and best wishes.
Sarah, Karen and Sophie at Pelo.

To Andy, Jackie and family:
A rose that sleeps in winter, will bloom again in spring
A rose will Flower throughout the summer, and bring you so much pleasure
But the autumn time is hard for you, because your rose no longer blooms
Just remember Matthew who bloomed, throughout his summer and gave you so much pleasure
Now that autumn time is here and Matthew no longer blooms
But through the long hard days of winter while the rose is resting quiet, your hearts are also resting
For come the spring just like the rose, your hearts will bloom again.

always here for you night and day, your friend
June Talbot-Bloor xxxx

I would just like to offer my sincere condolences to Matt’s family and friends. I had the privilege of working with Matt on a job for Persimmons in Tamworth. I found him to be a very genuine person and funny person, also he showed me the ropes and what I had to do in my job. My thoughts are with his family. R.I.P Matt.
Simon Belcher

I just wanted to say how sorry and saddened I am to hear of Matt's sudden and tragic death. Although I live in Kent it certainly struck a cord with me having lost my own husband, Paul Sykes, last year. He, like Matt, collapsed unexpectedly playing football for Folkestone Invicta FC with no prior warning at the age of 28 and left behind not only me but a 9 month old son. It seems unthinkable that such fit and healthy young men can just be taken from us. My thoughts are with his family, friends, team mates but especially his wife Sarah. Keep strong and take strength in the amount of support that the world of football can provide as it certainly helped me. Take Care
Carly Sykes

This is an absolute tragedy and our thoughts are with Matthew’s family and friends. Incidents like this put everything into perspective and no-one can quite come to terms with what has happened. Matthew had made a big impact on the football club during his time at the Marston’s Stadium and he will be sadly missed by everyone.
Kevin Downes, Hinckley United Chairman

Deepest sympathy to Matt's wife, his beautiful baby girl, his supportive family and loved friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time. We will keep your place in the changing rooms, on the pitch and in our hearts forever. You will be truly missed by all of your team mates. We dedicate our season to you Matt and all who loved him. God Bless you mate - Top Man!
Your Captain - Richard Lavery and Wife Gemma xxxx

Will always be in my thoughts Matty. Rest in peace big lad!
Wayne Diuk, Hinckley United player

On Saturday as I was injured I wasn’t sure if I would have to travel to the game. But the gaffer ensured every player travelled. Never have I been more grateful that Dean was in one of those moods because had I not been there I can't imagine how I would have ended up feeling. Having known Matt as a fellow team-mate over the past few months, I have to say that my memories of Matt is that he was 100% a genuine and honest person who wore his heart on his sleeve and went out with the mentality that every game was going to be his last and played with no regrets and always gave it his all and did his best. Matt was a big character amongst the players and will be missed tremendously by all of us. As a Hinckley United player all I can do is send my condolences to your family Matt and promise to give my all in every game and drive on to try to win the league in your memory. Every time I put on my boots and step out to play football Matt will be in my memory and never have I had more motivation as a player to go onto the pitch and give my all and try to play with no regrets and I feel this thought is echoed throughout the team. Its important that we get together now as a team, players, fans and directors and come together as a football family and stand by each other and become a stronger unit and go on to make matt proud of us. Matt was and still is an important link within our Hinckley United chain. We have not lost him, he has spread himself around each one of us to makes us a stronger unit together. Matt Gadsby will continue to live on in the hearts of each and every one of us. RIP Matt Gadsby may your presence live in on our hearts forever. God Bless.
Chris Nurse, Hinckley United player

On behalf of the Hinckley United Ladies team I would like to offer our condolences to Matt's family, friends and all at Hinckley United FC. Our thoughts go out to you. We will be thinking about you in our games to come. RIP Matt.
Jayne Hough, Hinckley United Ladies Captain

It really is something I wish to never witness again. The horrible sinking feeling knowing that as the paramedics tended to him on the pitch, that sadly I was watching him die, and so then the guilt of realising this was happening and I couldn't do anything about it. Being a father of two young girls myself I really feel heartfelt sympathy towards the family he leaves behind, and my feelings of shock and guilt can never be measured next to the sense of hopelessness his family must be feeling now. My wife Ruth and my thoughts go out to his family.
Dave, Ruth, Alexandria and Georgina Jackson, Hinckley United independent

How do you make sense of something so very, very senseless? My most sincere thoughts and sympathies are with Matt's family and friends. I hope everyone at Wetherby Road yesterday can somehow find peace. Matt Gadsby R.I.P.
Simon, Hinckley United

Thinking of your family and friends at this sad time, RIP.
Dai, Hinckley United

After Saturdays heartache and long and quite journey home for me and Jake, it is truly inspiring to see the football community come together as one on such a sad occasion. Jake and I would like to send our condolences to Matts parents, wife and young daughter. Rest in Peace Matt
Mark and Jake, Hinckley United

Only a couple of weeks ago we stood behind the goal at Hinckley and celebrated the joy of Matt's winner with the players right in front of us, and now its just despair, disbelief and hurt as he has been taken from us all. I must say what a fantastic response and great tribute to Matt as both a player and a person especially on this site and elsewhere as well, from the wider football community and supporters from all over the country. Truly amazing. Heartfelt thoughts go out to Matt's family and all those close to him at this difficult time. Hope this little poem by Richard Fife may offer a crumb of comfort:
Memory can tell us only what we were,
In company with those we loved;
It cannot help us find out what each of us,
Alone, must now become.
Yet, no person is really alone;
Those who live no more still echo
Within our thoughts and words,
And what they did has become
Woven into what we are.
David Nicholls and the twins, Matthew and Andrew, Hinckley United

Thoughts are with Sarah and Matt's young daughter. He was a nice fella and had been a rock this year at the centre of Hinckley's defence. I know everyone at Hinckley will feel the pain, probably more so in that people are always important in a small family club like Hinckley United. My thoughts are also with the rest of Matt's familiy. I've lost a son and to lose someone before their time makes the pain even greater. Be safe in the knowledge that although the pain and anguish will fade with time, the good and happy memories will always stay with you. Matty RIP.
JP, Hinckley United

Deeply saddened by this news. My thoughts are with his family. Thanks you Matt. R.I.P

My thoughts are with Sarah, Millie and all of the family, such a sad loss of a true friend. Rest in Peace Mate x
Julian Alsop, Newport County player

Craig Adams

Was absolutely gutted to hear about Matt's sad death. I went to school with him. He was 2 school years below me but was always going to be a good player from an early age. I remember him being a cocky confident player who was sure of his ability at the junior level and he was right to be like this as he was the best at his age by a street! A really good lad who always worked at his game and was thought very highly of around the school and teams he represented, especially my schoolyard team he played for on a few lunchtimes with our tennis ball! I'm gutted to hear about this, but its great to know that the whole football world is one big family. RIP Matt.
Andy Dunn, Mickleover Sports/Polesworth High School

I've felt so sad all weekend since seeing the news, it puts everything into perspective, there is no logic to the way lives are taken . Matt was a great player and will always remain part of Walsall's history being part of that promotion winning team in Cardiff. Joshua Kendall aged 9

I had the pleasure of interviewing Matt when he was a Kidderminster Harriers player; what a shock to hear the tragic news from Harrogate. Please pass on my deepest sympathy to Matt's partner and family; he was a genuinely decent lad, who always gave his best when I saw him in a Harriers' shirt. However badly any of our favourite sides might have played at the weekend, this puts everything into perspective.
Trevor Owens, Sports Editor, BBC Hereford and Worcester

Ian Mcmahon

I'd like to join my condolences with the masses of others on your message board at present. I can't believe it was only last week when some of us Bloods were sat sharing beers with our good friends of the Barwell Crew in your Clubhouse, busy extolling Matt's virtues. I know by what was said that day, that in a short time he'd become a much valued guy, and I'm sure that's the way you'll all remember him. Many Bloods consider Hinckley to be the friendliest Club in the league, which seems to make this especially tragic. On behalf of your Friends at Droylsden, our thoughts are with you all.
Paul "Stroller" Quinn

Dear friends at Hinckley, there is nothing else I can say that has already been said. All I can do is echo "Stroller's" comments in that Droylsden Supporters' Club Committee are keen to do anything that would be helpful, and I note there are bank details for donations for the benefit of the family that Matt has so tragically left behind. As Vice-Chair of said SC, I do hope that we will be in a position to do whatever we can, and that when you guys come to us in December, the hurt won't be so bad and we will be able to raise a glass to celebrate Matt's life. With my sincere condolences.
Blood Red, Droylsden

Our thoughts are with Matt's family, colleagues and the supporters of Hinckley United at this terrible time. From all at Moor Green.

As a Walsall fan on behalf of my family and myself I would like to pass on my deepest sympathies to Matt's wife and family at this sad news. I saw Matt play many times and in particular he will always hold a special place in Saddlers fans hearts after the Millenium Stadium victory. You will never be forgotten Matt and Walsall fans will remember you. xx
Donna

Bill Shankley said 'football was more important than life and death' he may have been a great manager and a great man, but he was wrong. I got home from Boro's first win of the season feeling great and that feeling was shattered as soon as I put on the TV to get the results and saw the tragic news. My thoughts are with his family and friends and I am sure everyone at Nuneaton sends their condolences.
Bluepeter, NBFC

I am a Walsall fan who wanted to give my condolences. I have only just heard this news after not logging onto the internet after our defeat yesterday. Suddenly it doesn't matter one bit. Matt was someone who always gave 100% for Walsall. I never met him but by all accounts he was a lovely guy. He will be much missed by Saddlers fans as well as you lot at Hinckley. I want to send my deepest sympathies to his family and friends. RIP Matt.
Puddletown Tom

I watched Wolves defeat Leeds at Elland Road today but the result was tainted by the knowledge of the untimely loss of a talented life. I think I can speak for all the supporters of Wolverhampton Wanderers in expressing my deepest and sincerest condolences to Matt's colleagues, his wife, young child and all at Hinckley United FC. It will hurt like hell now but take pride in his talent and remember his life with relish. He died doing something he loved, playing football.

If there is any comfort to be drawn from this tragic occurrence it is the fact that at the time of his passing Matt was doing one of the things he loved best. May he rest in peace.
Johnh

This is such tragic news a fine footballer, loving husband and dad. They say the good die young, seems that's been proven correct again, but at least he died playing his favourite game surrounded by friends. May his wife and child find the strength from everyone's support and the fact he was so well liked and I'm sure admired by many a young player. God Bless everyone connected with Matt.

Our sincere condolences to Matt's family, friends, teammates and all at Hinckley United. Although we never knew Matt we feel a great deal of grief for a fellow non-leaguer just going about his life and playing the game he loved. I just don't know how I would deal with it if it was one of our players. Looking at all the messages it's nice to see the non-league 'family' coming together at this sad time. We all have rivalries and feel aggrieved when we lose but this puts everything into context. R.I.P. Matt.

Everything that could be said has already been said on here so I'll keep my message short. I just want to say I have fond memories of Matt while playing for Mansfield and my deepest sympathies go out to all his family and loved ones. RIP Matt.
R Cooper, Mansfield Town

Read the posts last night via my mobile phone and I'm just as shocked this morning. He came up through the ranks here at Walsall and was seen to have considerable talent. Matty will always be remembered for his determination. He always gave 110%. That day at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff where he came on as sub and played his part in our promotion will always stick in the memory. 27 years old, yet another Saddler taken from us at such an early age. Never thought we would be mourning the death of a Millenium Stadium hero so soon. My prayers go out to his family and friends at such a sad time. R.I.P Matt Gadsby.

Shocked, the only word to describe this news! Matt was a former Walsall player and didn't get too many chances to shine but remembered by all true Walsall fans as the man who played the ball the Darren Byfield play off final day, who then scored the winner deep in to extra time!! Thoughts go out to family and friends! Rest in peace Matt Gadsby.
Dan, Walsall

I heard the terrible news about Matt as soon as I got back home, feeling down after our (Walsall's) first defeat of the season, at Grimsby. First defeat, so what? Tragedies like this put all else into perspective. Matt was a true professional who played a full part in the most successful period in Walsall's history, including a massive hard-working contribution to our Millenium Stadium triumph over Reading in 2001, that saw us reach Division One (now The Championship). As other Walsall fans have said, many of us think Matt was unfortunate to have been released from Bescot, but he got on with it and made his way in the lower leagues, working hard, just as he always did at Walsall, enjoying success and earning great respect amongst players, officials and fans alike at the clubs he has represented. For it all to end this way, so suddenly and unexpectedly, and at such a young age is an awful tragedy. My thoughts are for Matt, and my deepest condolences go to his wife, young daughter and all of his family. Matty, thank you for all you did for Walsall, the fans of The Saddlers will not forget you. RIP.

The Hamilton match today was abandoned after medics had to run on the pitch 15 minutes from the end when young defender Ross McCabe slid in for a tackle and caught his opponent's studs in his throat, apparently damaging his windpipe. As people became aware how serious it was, the ground fell silent while the physio gave Ross CPR on the pitch. The Ambulance arrived, and after twenty minutes the game was announced abandoned and people left the ground stunned. Thankfully for us, Ross is now sitting up in hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The sense of relief we've all felt is now destroyed after hearing what's happened to your player. Very sorry for Matt's family, friends, and everyone who saw what happened.

To the friends, team-mates and family of Matt. We all know that sport and the love of sport is something that unites us all. It brings us an affinity with each other in such a way that people of different races, classes and backgrounds are able to form lifetime bonds with each other. Me and my mates go down to every Hinckley game at the Marstons Stadium. I can't believe just last week we were watching Matt score against Farsley, thinking what a good player he was. It is very sad to hear about his death.
Jack Rafferty

I visit Hinckley on many occasions. I am sure some would recognise my face, I often visit this website. I am a Leicester fan but last season went more HUFC games out of choice. As I look through the results, Hinckley United's game at Harrogate has been abandoned. Reports from the local radio suggest a Hinckley player had collasped and I was concerned and I hoped it was something like an asthma attack or of similar description. However, it was not. Matt Gadsby woke up this morning with the thought I am living the dream, I enjoy my work. He stepped on the pitch and wanted to get 3 points for his children and wife. Hopefully, a goal meaning a nice bonus. He died however on the pitch. I visit Hinckley at least ten times a season and I could recognise this player easily in the street. A family in mourning, a team in mourning, a club in mourining, a town in mourning. I hope Matt you can see everyone now, posting their supportive messages on various sites. I hope it is recognisable by all has been a day to forgot Football and its results to give moments thoughts for someone else.
Harry, A Visitor To Hinckley On Many Occasions.

I am hopelessly unqualified to say anything on here. But reading the other comments I am genuinely moved by the heartfelt remarks and wish you all well.
Woking Fan

Thats just terrible. So young and with wife and child as well. My initial thoughts are obviously with all those who knew and loved him, but also those who had to watch these terrible scenes and now remember them. I earlier tried not to imagine what the team coach was like on the way back. I know you will know, but things like this (like the Boro's bournemouth tragedy) show football supporters for what they are. One big family.

just to say how sorry it is to hear such sad news I hope everyone gets together to support his family what a great loss
d blood, Droylsden Fan

It's horrible, it's nasty and it shouldn't be allowed, my heart goes out to his wife and little girl. Forget phrases like "puts it all in perspective" and stuff like that,a young man has died playing the game he loves, it's just not fair. RIP to a player I never knew - but a player I will remember
Mossley Smiffy

I'm a Pompey Nut who has Farnborough Town as his second side. I came home from Fratton Park happy as a whatsit having got to 10 points from 4 games and no goals conceded. And then read your news. Mentally I could see it happening at a Farnborough game or a Pompey game. Mossley Smiffy is right - it's horrible and it's nasty. He was the same age as my son, and my heart goes out to his widow and his daughter, his parents, family and friends.
Chris Millar

As one who has followed football and non league in particular for the last 50 years at Workington, I find it extremely difficult to come up with a form of words to adequately express my thoughts at this moment. One of the many pleasures of following non league football is the opportunity to have discussions and conversations with players, officials and supporters of opposing teams, which therefore makes it a more personal experience. Therefore this tragic incident has more of a personal impact than one would expect. Suffice to say that my thoughts are with Matt's family at this time and all at the Club.
Roy Nick
